NTSB places White Sands GPS jamming at fatal King Air crash

A King Air air ambulance flew into terrain during military GPS jamming.

The Beechcraft King Air C90, registration N249CP, departed Roswell Air Center just before midnight on 14 May 2026 on a medical positioning flight to Sierra Blanca Regional Airport near Ruidoso. Four crew were on board: two pilots and two flight nurses. Shortly after takeoff the crew reported losing GPS reception. White Sands Missile Range was running a scheduled jamming exercise that night. The window covered the flight's time and route.

Air traffic controllers contacted the range and negotiated a temporary freeze. The pilots were cleared for a visual approach. At about 00:10 local the jamming resumed. Around five minutes later the aircraft struck the Capitan Mountains, roughly 70 metres below the summit. All four occupants were killed. The wreckage ignited the Seven Cabins Fire in the Lincoln National Forest.

The NTSB preliminary report, docket WPR26FA186, was published on 18 June 2026. The board documents the GPS outage, the ATC negotiation, and the resumption of jamming. Probable cause has not been determined. Three other aircraft in the same airspace reported losing GPS that night, with one crew needing extra controller assistance to identify a navigation beacon. A final report typically follows within 12 to 24 months.

The FAA had published a NOTAM in advance covering the White Sands jamming window. Crews routinely encounter such notices around military test ranges in the southwestern United States. The preliminary report ties military jamming to the loss of GPS minutes before impact. It does not yet apportion cause.

FAA proposes CF34 corrosion inspections on Challenger 600 fleet

The FAA has proposed mandatory borescope inspections on GE CF34 engines. The notice, docket FAA-2026-3875, was published in the Federal Register on 1 May 2026. About 1,152 US-registered engines are in scope across the Bombardier Challenger 600 series and the CRJ200. The unsafe condition is corrosion in the variable geometry system, capable of causing dual-engine power loss in salt-air environments. The rule follows the NTSB final report of 23 April 2026 on the 9 February 2024 Naples crash of Hop-A-Jet Flight 823. Two pilots died. The comment window closed on 15 June. Hop-A-Jet has urged the FAA to tighten the proposal.

FAA sets electronic security conditions for Honeywell Falcon 900EX upgrade

The FAA has set new airworthiness conditions for the Dassault Falcon 900EX. The special conditions, Federal Register document 2026-12277, cover the Falcon 900EX as modified by Honeywell Aerospace US LLC. They require the modified aircraft to be protected against unauthorised external access to its electronic systems. The original airworthiness standards did not anticipate the network connectivity now in scope. The notice was on public inspection on 18 June 2026 ahead of Federal Register publication. The Falcon 900EX uses Honeywell's Primus Epic platform, the foundation for the EASy avionics suite Dassault has carried on the type since 2003.
